April Goals

Tomorrow is the first of April which means it's time to share my goals for April!  Before I do that, let's recap my March Goals.  See my original post here.

March Goals Recap

1. I read this book this month!
Not the best book I've ever read but it was a quick read & made me think in a different way.  It was made into a movie so I may look into renting it at some point.  There is a sequel to this book (Where She Went) that I may look into for reading this summer!

2. The office isn't quite finished but it's almost there. I'm going to do a separate post on it soon to share how it turns out!  We love the color scheme and pieces we've chosen.

3. I have made some progress with pictures this month but still have some work to do! This is going to be a continuing project I think : )

4. Start a devotional.
I started this Jane Austen devotional this month.  I love Jane Austen & the Bible, so seeing how they draw lessons out of the two is very interesting!  I haven't been very good about doing it every day (going to try to do that in the month of April) but I love it so far.
5. I have been better about getting up earlier & going to bed earlier. I have far from perfected this but it's getting better and something I will continue to work on! I always feel like I need to stay up and get stuff done around the house but regret that when my alarm goes off the next morning.  Laying down earlier helps me not feel so tired in the mornings which makes them more productive & enjoyable!

6. This month I lost 1 1/2 pounds!  Not the four I was hoping for but progress is progress :)  I have only myself to blame.  We've been so busy lately that I've gotten into a habit of just grabbing what is convenient instead of planning my meals.  Hoping to slow down and refocus on this next month.

April Goals

 1. Do a devotional or read my bible every day.
My relationship with God is so important to me and I need to get into a habit of setting aside some time each day to just focus on communicating with Him and studying His word.

2. Make some progress on landscaping.
We are working on redoing all the landscaping in our front & back yards.  I'm going to document this on the blog and I'm hoping I'll have lots of updates this month!  We're so excited for the beautiful weather and to spend time together working on our yard.

3. Spring clean the house and closets.
I am going to start changing over our closets this week from our fall/winter clothes to our spring/summer clothes.  At the same time, I hope to get rid of a bunch of stuff that we no longer wear or need.  The second part of this is I want to spring clean our house.  Reorganize cabinets & closets, deep clean floors etc.  Stay tuned for more of this on the blog!

4. Start a new exercise routine.
I had some neck and back trouble last month and as a result of my x-rays, I am supposed to limit high intensity exercise that would bring all the problems back that the chiropractor fixed.  I ordered Yoga for the Warrior to try and am excited to take rides on my new bicycle now that the weather is better! I'm hoping that those two activities combined with our nightly walks will help me get back into an exercise routine!

5. Lose 3 lbs.
I'm determined to refocus on mindful eating and meal planning this month.  I want to go back to prepping food for the week so that I have healthy options that are easy to grab and that will keep me mindful of what I'm eating.  I'm hoping this combined with increased exercise will get me closer to my goal!

6. Read 1 book.
I'm going to make it a continuous goal to read at least one book each month.

Weekend Recap

This weekend was fun, busy, relaxing and exciting all in one!
On Friday, we had yummy pizza for dinner!

And then snuggled up on the couch to watch the Louisville game and our shows after!  Nothing better than weekends with this guy :)
On Saturday, I took a road trip with my Granny to Ft. Campbell and we had such a fun day!
And we spotted a fire truck food truck! How cool!
Spring has sprung!  This girl is so happy to add some color to her wardrobe :)

On Sunday, we had Easter on the Kaelin side

Love these two

So happy about the warmer weather & Sunday Fundays together :)

Love.

I made Broccoli Casserole for Easter and it was a hit!  Jared loved it and we didn't have any leftovers. A family recipe success :)

After Easter, we watched the Louisville game (sad to see our Cards lose but so proud of them!), went for a walk & then grabbed takeout and watched two movies.  We watched Planes & Horrible Bosses 2!  Both funny & good movies!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!  I don't know about you but I am SO excited that it's the weekend!  We have a busy & fun weekend ahead and I can't wait to get it started :)  But before I do that, it's time to share some of my favorite things this Friday.
1. Easter Dresses
Primary Image of Scallop Bodice Dresshttp://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2009214/disneys-cinderella-a-collection-by-lc-lauren-conrad-organza-bow-back-dress-womens.jsp
There are so many cute dresses right now that would be perfect for Easter!  I'm in total spring mode and can't wait to live in dresses this spring/summer.  Find dress 1 here, dress 2 here, dress 3 here.
2. Cinderella

Seriously, I'm obsessed with this movie.  Jared and I both want to go see it again.  It was that good!!
Have you seen Lauren Conrad's new Cinderella collection for Kohl's?  Adorable!  See more of the collection here.
3.  It's Spring!

One of my favorite things to do right now is work on our yard with J : ) we have a lot of work to do but it is fun doing it together.

First sign of spring in our yard!
4. New Earrings

I bought these earrings a little while ago from Target & now that Spring has arrived I get to wear them a lot and I LOVE them!  They are only $8!!!! and they are the perfect color that goes with pretty much everything and not heavy.  Must have earrings for sure!  Find them here.  They have a buy one, get one 50% off sale going on online on clothing, shoes & accessories right now too.

5. Leggings

My absolute favorite, must have, go buy them right now leggings are on sale!  They are worth the money at the original price so the sale price is amazing.  SOOO comfortable and NOT see through. Click here to find them on the Nordstrom website.

6. Easter
Springtime is great for a lot of reasons but my absolute favorite is Easter.  Easter is a time when I feel my faith is rejuvenated and I am humbled in the reminder of Christ's sacrifice for me.  A love that big is overwhelming, redeeming, and awe inducing!  Please remember that this special time isn't about the Easter Bunny, baskets full of goodies and hunting for eggs.  Don't get me wrong those things are fun but not what Easter is about.  Easter is a day of hope, a reminder that Christ rose from the dead and gave us new life.

Beef Lo Mein

I love to cook but there are some days I just need an easy meal for dinner so I can do the other 5,000 things on my list.  I love sharing my more involved recipes with you all but I think it's important to share the easiest meal ideas as well.

This meal doesn't get any easier.  The other night Jared was working and I wanted to make something for dinner but didn't want to spend a whole lot of time on it!  We had a P.F. Chang's Beef and Broccoli meal in the freezer that I wanted to use up.  Confession: I'm a carb girl and I'm cutting down on eating carbs on my diet but sometimes this girl needs some pasta.  I love lo mein and decided to make my own homemade version using the P.F. Chang's meal.  I cooked the beef & broccoli according to package directions and at the same time boiled the noodles.  Normally, I would have just used fettucini noodles but I had some spaghetti that needed to be used up as well so I just said what the heck and prepared a mixture of the two!

A few minutes before the beef & broccoli were done, I added the noodles to the skillet and added some soy sauce and teriyaki sauce to taste.  I let all of this saute together for about 5 minutes and then it was ready to eat!

Quick, easy, not fancy at all.  But very yummy!  Some nights I'm all for going all out on cooking but sometimes you just need a few things to throw together for a quick & easy meal.

DIY Wedding Card Book

I love cards!  On holidays, it's a rare occurrence for J to get just one card :)  I am the girl who stands in the card aisles and spends so much time searching for the perfect card (sometimes shedding a tear).  I have kept special cards from many occasions over the years so when it came time to figure out something to do with our wedding cards I knew it had to be something better than a box in the closet.

I did a lot of research and pinterest searching on different ways to create a keepsake out of our wedding cards.  We received so many beautiful & love filled cards and I wanted a way to preserve them where we could enjoy them for years to come!

I decided to make a wedding card book!  We had too many cards to put in one book so I ended up making two.  I stacked all the wider cards in one stack and the more vertical cards in another.  Cards come in a lot of different shapes & sizes now so I had to get creative with these which I'll show in pictures below!  I used black cardstock as backing for my covers and to attach cards to that didn't fit the size needed for the books.  To make them more personalized, I added some flair to the covers :)  Then I spent a lot of time hole punching each card and threading it on the ribbon. Thankfully Haley was over during this part!  Girl talk made this process go by so much faster, even though she thinks I'm crazy for keeping cards at all ;)

It wasn't a super hard task to make these, just took some planning & some time to put them together :)  I highly recommend making something like this out of your wedding cards!  I know in the years to come, memories of who wrote what in their card and who came to our showers & wedding will not be as easy to recall.  But now I have this awesome collection of cards that I can go back & enjoy when I want to reminisce on our wedding : )

I attached cards that weren't easy to hole punch onto black cardstock cut to be the same size as the covers with double sided tape.

We received several small cards like this so I cut out more cardstock the size of the cover and attached the cards with double sided tape.  Then I added some stickers to the pages to decorate them a little bit more!
I added the year of our wedding to the back cover!
The black cardstock provided the perfect backing for the cards and kept the pages pretty even throughout the book.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how these turned out!  They are fun to have around the house and I'm really glad to have this project done and the stack of cards in our office gone and nicely displayed in our living room :)

25 Things You Don't Know About Me

Today, I decided to share a few things about me that you might not know just for fun!
1. My favorite books are Pride and Prejudice and Girl of the Limberlost.
2. When I was little, I always told my parents I would grow up to marry only one of these three men: Patrick Swayze, John Travolta or Billy Ray Cyrus. Ha!
3. I hate staying by myself at night and have an addiction to Law & Order SVU marathons.  This is not a good combination :/
4. There's nothing I enjoy more when it comes to music than old time gospel.  It makes me cry every time and moves my soul.
5. I feel deeply.  I love big and hurt big.  Can be a huge strength but its also a weakness.
6. I wanted to name my brother Brian Mackenzie off Father of the Bride.  (parents said no, lucky for him!  I did end up with a dog named Mackenzie though!)
7.  I'm an emotional person.  I cry when I'm happy or sad.  On a scale of 1-10 if I'm not between a 3-7, I'm probably going to have some tears.  Commercials get me all the time and I started crying during the opening credits of our wedding video!  It's bad :)
8. I'm not really into the actual act of hunting (nothing against it at all, just hard for me to be quiet that long ;) ) but I am a great shot!  I love going target shooting.
9. I hate being told I can't do something.  If I'm challenged to do something, I hate to lose and will do everything I can to succeed.
10. I love to write.  Not just on the blog, but poetry, song lyrics, etc.  It's a great way to get out my creative energy and I love it!
11. If I could quit my job and do anything for a year, I would want to be a travel writer and see the whole world with J :)
12. The day we closed on our first home is my aunt & uncle's wedding anniversary & the day we broke ground on my dad's house.  That day is quite meaningful in our family!
13.  I was born on my grandfather's sisters birthday and my brother was born on his brother's birthday.
14. The sound of Styrofoam that comes in boxes literally makes me cringe and feel nauseous.
15. I have traveled abroad to China, South Africa and the Dominican Republic.  I have a heart that constantly desires to travel this world and am always working on planning a trip somewhere!
16. I love reality tv!  I think its absolutely ridiculous but it's like the train wreck you can't look away from!
17.  My favorite (non-reality shows) are Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, The Vampire Diaries, Hart of Dixie, Nashville & Chicago Fire/PD.
18. We're working on some pretty big new adventures in The Peacock Roost right now so stay tuned :)
19. I grew up in McLean Co. & Daviess Co. so I consider myself a dual citizen.  Living in the city is convenient for now but I am counting down the days until we move to the country!
20. I am super organized in every facet of my life except one --- my purse is always a complete disaster!
21. I'm a total klutz. I can walk down an empty hallway barefoot and find a way to fall.  It's a good thing I'm married to a firefighter/EMT :)
22. Most people love milk with their oreos but I prefer cherry kool aid :)
23. I love English hot tea.  My grandmother and I have shared more cups of tea since I was a little girl than I can count!
24. Jared and I dated and were friends in high school and then reconnected once I moved back to Owensboro 5 years later.
25. I come across really serious and focused but those closest to me know I love to be silly & laugh :)

Weekend Recap

We had a full weekend!
Friday I took off a half day just to spend time with my husband!  He took me to lunch downtown at Bee Bop's.

Totally not on my diet right now but who cares?  Forget those calories and feed me that burger!
Afterwards, he took me shopping at one of my favorite stores - Bella Ragazza!  Followed up by a trip to the chiropractor for us both (post to come on my journey to becoming a chiropractic patient) and a crafting trip to Hobby Lobby (you'll see why on this later!).  After our adventures out, we returned home to watch the UofL game and then I hung out with the girls & our husbands had poker night :)
Saturday was beautiful and we spent most of the day working on our landscaping!  We are slowing down decorating and furnishing the inside right now and switching focus to the outside of our house.  We just bought our house last August and spent so much time getting the inside ready before the wedding that we didn't do a whole lot to the yard besides pull up the huge bushes around the front of our house.  Huge bushes doesn't even describe these.  I'll post some before and after pictures as we make progress and I can promise you will be shocked by how much the look of our house changed just from pulling up those bushes!
We dug up all of the brick outlining the landscaping which ended up being quite a job with how much it had sunken into the ground.  We basically had to dig up a trench around all of our landscaping front & back!  But this is okay because we're basically taking all existing landscaping out and starting over!
Not long after we started, we realized we would need another shovel and I needed some gloves to work with!  We headed off to Lowe's and I ended up with these gloves.
My name is Kelsey and I have the hands of a child and couldn't keep the smallest women's gloves from falling off.  So Disney princess gloves it is!
Saturday night we had dinner with J's parents and then we had a date night to go see Cinderella!

My husband is the best : )
Best movie I've seen in a long time!  The movie was so beautiful and really focused on encouraging young girls to have courage & be kind instead of focusing so much on the romance aspect.  It was wonderful seeing this classic recreated in a new way that not only worked but kept me smiling the whole movie and put me in the most amazing mood!  Jared and I both really enjoyed it.
Sunday Jared worked which meant I trekked over to McLean county by myself for church & then lunch with my grandad, dad & stepmom!
Trying out a new outfit for church!

  How precious is he?
After lunch, we headed home to stream the OHS championship game!  The high school Jared and I both attended (and where our story began) won the state basketball championship!! How exciting :)  So proud to be a red devil!

When I got home, some of our flowers were blooming!
Sunday night, my best friend & maid of honor Haley came over and hung out with me while I worked on this wedding card book & we watched the Louisville game.  The Cards pulled off another win that moves them on to the sweet sixteen!  What a great day to be an OHS & Louisville fan!
Post to come on how I made my DIY wedding card book soon!
All in all, it was a pretty great weekend!  It went by too fast as usual though.  We have a lot of exciting things going on this week that I can't wait to share :)
Happy Monday!

Friday Favorites

It's Friday (thank goodness!!!!) which means its time to share some of my favorite things with you all!  Also, happy first day of spring!! I'm super excited for the warmer weather to come and to transition my closet! Boots & sweaters were fun for a while but I'm ready for shorts & sandals!
1. Yankee Candles
http://www.yankeecandle.com/product/bunny-cake/_/R-1300162?_requestid=82174http://www.yankeecandle.com/product/eucalyptus/_/R-11511?_requestid=82191
http://www.yankeecandle.com/product/picnic-in-the-park/_/R-1322999?_requestid=82201http://www.yankeecandle.com/product/juicy-watermelon/_/R-1082297?_requestid=82214
I wanted some new candles for our house so bad but it was hard to find ones that I liked & Jared liked.  While in Evansville a while ago, we went to the Yankee Candle store and found FOUR that we loved!  These are the four we bought.  I'm saving Watermelon and Picnic in the Park for this summer.  Right now, we are using Bunny Cake & Eucalyptus.  Eucalyptus was a very common oil and fragrance used at the resort we stayed at on our honeymoon and we've been looking to recreate the scent ever since!  My thoughtful husband had the sales lady find one online that they could order for me (not in all the stores anymore).  We burn it and it is instantly relaxing! Love it!  The Bunny Cake candle is perfect for this time of year and super fun with Easter coming up!  Click on any of the images above to find these candles on the Yankee Candle website!
2. Music

I always love music but I have heard so many new amazing songs lately!  It's springtime officially & I love some good music to drive around listening & singing to :)

If this song doesn't cause a dance party to occur in your car, we can't be friends :)

3. March Madness!
It's officially March Madness and there's a lot of basketball watching going on in our house!  Our high school is currently competing in the state tournament & we are streaming that when we can.  We're also cheering for our Cards in the NCAA tournament!   My bracket is already a disaster but I don't care, I just want to see our Cards make a good run!

4. Creating new recipes!
I'm working on some new recipes for our house & the blog right now and it's so fun trying out new ideas :)

5. Time off spent with my husband :)
Life has been so crazy lately that I'm taking off at noon today just to spend a fun afternoon with this guy!  Super excited to just hang out and enjoy the day :)  We have a busy but fun weekend ahead and I'm pretty darn excited that we've carved out some time today & tomorrow to just spend some good quality time together!

Daily Schedule

Last week, I talked about our cleaning schedule here & that routines were currently one my favorite things in my Friday Favorites found here!  I am not crazy enough to think that we can always follow routines or schedules but I also believe that if you don't set a goal you'll never meet it.  So I think of these as more "goals" for the day, week, etc that I try to meet.  I decided to create a daily schedule for myself to just keep me on task throughout the day and am sharing that with you all today!

I have found my cleaning schedule harder to follow but this daily schedule has really helped me!

Getting a lot of the necessary daily stuff (checkbook, bills, etc) out of the way first thing in the morning really helps me to be prepared for the day.  It might seem silly to lay out my pj's at lunch but it's a visual reminder to me when I get home to get all my stuff done & hop in those babies as fast as possible!  I can never get in fully relaxed mode until I'm in my pj's :)

Packing my food & work bag for the next day, as well as at least thinking about what I'm going to wear (laying it out is even better but doesn't always happen), really saves me time & a lot of stress in the mornings when I'm trying to get out the door!  I can go to bed not worrying about a long list in the morning and it frees up more am time that I can use to watch a show (I always save my fave reality shows for the mornings since I can just listen to it while I get ready), read a little or even take some time to relax!

Like I said, I don't follow this schedule every day.  Some days are so crazy right now that I'm glad I remember to take my house shoes off and throw on heels & flats before I head out the door.  (no joke: totally attempted to leave the house the other day all dressed up for work with houseshoes on.  Hand to face :/  Thankfully I noticed before getting in the car!)

Schedules aren't perfect and neither am I, but having this daily schedule & my cleaning schedule posted right in front of my face when I'm sitting in my home office reminds me of my goals for the day and keeps me on task!

What about you?  Do you keep a daily schedule?  Any little things you do throughout the day that just make life easier?  Feel free to share, I'm always up for ideas!
