Top 10 Organization Tips

One of the most requested topics I get for blog posts is organization!  I love to organize.  Closets, my life, drawers, papers, just give me something to organize and I am one happy girl!

I have some more in-depth posts coming on ways I organize that will give you lots of specifics but I thought today I would go ahead and share my top 10 organizational tips!

1. Buy a planner.

You will never be able to stay organized if you don't organize your day, appointments, etc.  I'm not a phone or computer calendar kind of girl. I like a paper planner.  Always have, always will.  I want one that has lots of list making space and that is easily portable to take with me wherever I go.  This year I purchased this planner & love it!

2. Meal plan.

With our crazy schedules, if we didn't meal plan we would be eating out and eating junk constantly.  Making a plan at the beginning of the week and having everything in our house and ready to cook keeps us eating healthy and cheaper!

3. Sort mail immediately.

Do not let mail stack up and pile up on your counters.  As soon as our mail comes, we go through it and toss the stuff we do not want/need, open bills and business papers and put it where it goes.  I normally come home for lunch and grab any bills and take those back to work, pay them and put them in our work outgoing mail.  I hate unnecessary paper laying around!  If you sort through it, pay any bills and organize anything you need to keep as it comes you won't have large piles to deal with.

4. Do a load of laundry every day.

Again, with our crazy schedules, if I get behind on laundry we can easily look up and be out of X, Y, or Z being clean that we need.  I almost always do a load of laundry every day to keep up!  I hate spending all day on a weekend doing laundry so if I do this it keeps it from being such a chore.

5. Pack lunches and lay out clothes the night before.

Mornings are the most hectic time of my day.  I'm trying to workout, do blog work, get ready for work, take all my meals/snacks with me, etc.  If I lay out my workout clothes the night before (and even my office outfit for the next day sometimes) this really helps.  I also pack any non-refrigerated items in my lunchbox the night before so that I only have to pack the cold items on my way out the door.

6. Keep a to-do list.

If you keep a visual of everything you need to do, you are more likely to get it all completed!  I personally love the satisfaction of crossing things off my to-do list.  I keep these on paper and in my planner.  Backspacing on my iPhone doesn't give me the same satisfaction as actually crossing through a task.  At the same time, realize you are not superwoman.  I have a long, everything I have to do list but I make a shorter list for each day that's manageable.  Picking a few items to handle each day keeps me from feeling so overwhelmed that i just freeze.

7. Spot clean daily.

We get very rare free time and when we do, I don't want to spend it working on cleaning the house.  I make a point to pick things up off the floor or put items that are laying out away in the morning, at lunch and at night.  Keeping the house more tidy allows me to feel more relaxed in our home and makes our house feel more put together.

8. Run dishwasher nightly.

I don't know how you ladies with families do it.  With just the two of us, we fill up our dishwasher so quickly!  I've gotten in the habit of if it's over halfway full running it most nights so that I can unload it in the morning while I let my hair dry in my towel.  This keeps our kitchen more organized and all the dishes I need clean and ready to be used the next night.

9. Organize as you put things away.

When we put groceries away, I rearrange our cabinets and fridge to keep like items together and keep everything neat.  All our canned vegetables are sorted by type, all pasta is together, etc.  If you do this, it will take an easy glance in your cabinets, pantry or refrigerator to see what you will need at the grocery.  I do the same thing in our closets.  As I put things away, they are sorted by category and if I'm in true Type A form by color most of the time too.  This makes grabbing the clothes we need a lot easier!

10. Budget and balance your checkbook/check bank accounts daily.

If you want to save money and get to your financial goals, you need a budget.  We have one that we try to strictly adhere to.  We have certain goals we want to accomplish and it will require staying focused on our budget to get there!

Almost every morning, I balance our personal and business checkbook and check all of our accounts. I also update my tracking of our income and expenses.  This keeps this task from being overwhelming and helps us stay on budget.

There you have it!  My top 10 organization tips! I'm planning on doing more detailed posts on most of these topics.  Which ones do you want to see first?  Any specific questions you all want answered?

Pineapple at Home

Pineapple is in this summer.  I'm sure you know this because it is EVERYWHERE but I still love it :)  When something is trendy, I like to add a few accent pieces but nothing too crazy expensive unless I really love it because it will go back out of style just as quickly.  I put together this collage of fun pineapple pieces for your home that let you embrace the pineapple trend this summer!
If you have a pool or outdoor seating area, all of these items would be perfect for that!  These pineapple sippers are SO cute & I may have one sitting in my Nordstrom cart :)  If you do a lot of outdoor entertaining, these pineapple place card holders would be perfect for outdoor dining!  This pineapple serving tray is definitely pricey but very cute and useful.  If you are a big outdoor entertainer, it may be worth the splurge!  A pineapple shaker is a great hostess gift idea or would be fun in any bar area outside, especially if these pineapple accent lights were hanging nearby.  A candle is always a fun and easy accent piece too!  You could use most of these items inside as well.
Are you into the pineapple trend this year?  How are you incorporating it into your home?

Simple Steps to a Spring-Ready Bedroom

It's always this time of year that I get the bug to freshen up our house for Spring!  Something about Spring just makes you want fresh décor, a few changes and a more colorful look.  I'm partnering with Crane & Canopy today to share my thoughts on how to create a spring-ready bedroom!

In my opinion, some of the easiest ways to do this are:

Pretty new sheets!  Fresh, clean sheets are one of my favorite treats and I love these options.  The mint scalloped option is a fun spin on the classic white sheet, I'm absolutely drooling over this vintage bike option and we own and love the white damask option!

A new throw is a great way to freshen up for spring!  I love the look of a throw blanket at the bottom of the bed and it's perfect for when I want to relax on our bed or bench and read without messing up our comforter!  I love this cable knit option, these knotted throws are my favorite and on my wish list, and if you like a heavier throw this chunky option is for you!

A new piece of décor can really freshen your bedroom up too!  A mirrored tray is a great place to put your daily jewelry or to put a vase of flowers on!  A colorful new throw pillow or a fun vase for fresh flowers would be a great touch as well.

For a final little touch, these are great ideas!  Have you ever tried spraying lavender on your sheets before going to bed?  So relaxing!!  A new candle is always refreshing and this eucalyptus one is one of my personal favorites.  These adorable sachets will help keep your stored linens fresh!

Any combination of the options above + fresh flowers is sure to make your bedroom feel ready for spring!  These are a few of the methods I use at our house.  How do you make your bedroom spring-ready?

Cooking Essentials + Dream Kitchen + {GIVEAWAY}

Today we're talking about one of my favorite places - the kitchen!  I love to cook and wanted to share my cooking essentials and dream kitchen with you!  Make sure to check out the giveaway at the bottom :)

Cooking Essentials

These are my cooking essentials in our current kitchen!

I hate a messy countertop so I use a spoon rest similar to this one.  I love a good mixing bowl set to mix recipes, serve snacks, for popcorn, etc.!  Clean water is another must for me to sip on while I cook and I love my Brita pitcher.  I love to bake when I have time and this egg storage container is a definite favorite!  I love being able to take a quick look in the fridge to see how many eggs we have.  Who doesn't love a little Kate Spade?  An apron is a must and I think this one is just too cute!  Jared and I received lots of great cookbooks for our wedding including this one.  I love to use them to get inspiration and ideas for new recipes!  Homemade mashed potatoes and cakes/cupcakes are some of my favorite things to make so I love this mixer!  We use olive oil in a lot of our recipes and use a similar bottle to this one to store it because it looks better out on the counter & makes it easier to control the pour!  Last but not least, I hate a dirty kitchen!!  I use this Method cleaner to wipe down our counters & love it!

Dream Kitchen

My wish list for my dream kitchen would definitely include these items!

Love this gas range from BlueStar!  I love popcorn & if my dream kitchen was a reality it would have enough space for a popcorn machine like this one for movie night :)  Serving pieces like this one would make entertaining or appetizers before dinner more fun!  Aren't these monogrammed salt & pepper mills great too?  They are super useful but would also add a nice touch sitting on the counter!  My dream kitchen would absolutely include space for a KitchenAid stand mixer!  I'm not sure exactly which one I want and do not have space for one in our current kitchen but I definitely want one (with the pasta making attachment) in our next house!  LOVE LOVE LOVE the Emma dinnerware set from Pottery Barn.  I want this whole collection eventually as our casual daily dishes for our forever home and love all the accessory pieces (pitcher, salt & pepper shakers, etc.).  I have decided to start collecting the Spode Christmas collection and my dream kitchen would have the complete set ready for the holidays!  A new cookware set like this one would be great to use! As a southern gal through and through, my dream kitchen wouldn't be complete without a great pitcher to serve tea and lemonade :)

Giveaway

Since we're talking about kitchen's today, I decided it was the perfect time for a giveaway :)  Pineapples are all the rage right now so I thought you all would love a pineapple apron & kitchen towels!  I love pineapples and all the bright colors that are so popular this year!  It just makes entertaining more fun!  See how to enter below!

PJ's & a warm and cozy blanket :)

And last but not least...a good show on Netflix to watch!  Jared and I started binge watching Blue Bloods this week which worked out perfectly for me because pretty much all I feel like doing once I get off work is laying on the couch!  Such a good show so far!
